Traditional Wound Dressings

Traditional wound dressing products are used most often as primary or secondary dressings to protect the wound from contamination. These products include gauze, lint, plasters, bandages (natural or synthetic), and cotton wool. Common types of traditional wound dressings include:

Advanced Wound Dressings

Advanced wound dressings are typically prescribed by clinicians after a visit to a doctor or hospital. The benefits of using advanced wound dressings include shortened heal time, optimized drainage and reduced risk of infection.

Fill the body with pure OXYGEN!

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is often an integral part of our treatment plans. HBOT is a therapy used to speed up healing of carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, wounds that won't heal, and infections in which tissues are starved for oxygen.

For this therapy, you enter a special chamber to breathe in 100% pure oxygen in air pressure levels 1.5 to 3 times higher than average. The goal is to fill the blood with enough oxygen to repair tissue and restore normal body function.

Treatment Options

bio-engineered skin grafting.

Bio-engineered skin is designed to temporarily take over the functions of the epidermis and/or dermis until the patient's skin barrier repairs spontaneously or until definitive skin replacement is possible with a skin graft or cultured equivalent.

debridement.

The removal of damaged tissue or foreign objects from a wound. There are 4 different types of debridements. These include surgical, biological, enzymatic, and autolytic.

advanced skin substitutes.

Advanced skin substitutes are a heterogeneous group of biologic, synthetic, or biosynthetic materials that can provide temporary or permanent coverage of open skin wounds. The aim of skin substitutes is to replicate the properties of the normal skin. Skin substitutes are an important adjunct in the management of acute or chronic wounds and can be used to cover defects following burns or other injuries, or for reconstruction, such as, release of extensive severe post-burn contractures.

collagen based products.

Collagen wound dressings are gels, pads, particles, pastes, powders, sheets, or solutions derived from bovine, equine, porcine, or avian sources. Some may interact with wound exudate to form a gel. They are indicated for partial-thickness and full-thickness pressure injuries, venous ulcers, donor sites, surgical wounds, vascular ulcers, diabetic ulcers, second-degree burns, abrasions, and traumatic wounds. They usually require a secondary dressing.

antimicrobial agents.

The most frequently used topical antimicrobials in modern wound care include iodine and silver containing products. In the past, acetic acid, chlorhexidine, honey, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate and proflavine have been used.

moisture balance dressings.

A moisture balance dressing is a wet-to-dry dressing. With this type of dressing, a wet (or moist) gauze dressing is put on your wound and allowed to dry. Wound drainage and dead tissue can be removed when you take off the old dressing.

negative pressure therapy.

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), also called vacuum-assisted wound closure, refers to wound dressing systems that continuously or intermittently apply subatmospheric pressure to the system, which provides a positive pressure to the surface of a wound.

edema control.

Edema can be defined as the presence of excess body fluid within or around body cells or tissues which manifests physically as swelling. Edema occurs due to the movement of excess interstitial fluid to the space between the cells that compose various body tissues. Failure of the body’s natural fluid drainage mechanism to clear the excess fluid will result in worsening body swelling. While edema can affect almost anyone, people who experience trauma, burn wounds, or have chronic medical conditions, such as hypertension, are more susceptible to developing significant body swelling.

compression therapy.

Compression therapy is the use of bandaging or other wound compression products in providing the right amount of pressure to an ulcerous limb or preventing ischemia or necrosis. Compression is the standard treatment for venous ulcers at several stages of the wound healing process.

casting for diabetic foot ulcers.

A total contact cast is used to treat ulcers (serious, deep sores) on a person’s foot. It consists of a fiberglass or plaster shell with a bar on the bottom. The shell fits around your leg and foot, following the shape of your foot. That’s why it is called a total contact cast. It is designed to distribute weight along the entire sole of the foot. The cast helps to protect the skin on your foot. Where the cast sits under the ulcer, there is a layer of soft foam. This makes a space so that no pressure is put on the sore. This allows it to heal more quickly. The cast has only a small amount of padding around the rest of the foot. The bar on the bottom helps keep weight off the sore when you are standing or walking.

pressure relief.

Open sores should be cleaned with water or a saltwater (saline) solution each time the dressing is changed. Putting on a bandage. A bandage speeds healing by keeping the wound moist. It also creates a barrier against infection and keeps skin around it dry. A hydrocolloid dressing contains a gel that encourages the growth of new skin cells in the ulcer, while keeping the surrounding healthy skin dry. Other dressing types such as foams, films, hydrofibres/gelling fibres, gels and antimicrobial (antibiotic) dressings, may also be used.

hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been around for a long time. This therapy uses high pressure and 100% oxygen to do what the red blood cells, but at a much quicker rate and more efficiently. HBOT forces 100% oxygen to your tissues which stimulates healing in the body.

teaching nutrition & lifestyle modification.

Some wounds may require a higher intake of certain vitamins and minerals to support healing. Significant weight loss or weight gain, as well as inadequate intake of proteins, fluids, energy and vitamins do influence the process of wound healing.
